Students - General Information

At the Ludwig our commitment is to provide post-graduate students with an environment in which to excel in cancer research and make original discoveries which will improve the understanding and treatment of cancer. To this aim the Institute provides state-of-the-art facilities and world-class scientists and medical specialists to guide young researchers.

The Ludwig Institute invites applications from highly motivated and creative individuals to undertake the following degrees, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Hons), B. Med Sci, Advanced Medical Science (AMS) and M.D. The Ludwig is affiliated with the University of Melbourne, and Ludwig students enrol for their degrees in the Departments of Surgery and Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. Students from a wide range of disciplines enrol at the Ludwig: Genetics, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Chemistry and Physics.

Interstate and overseas students recognise the unique environment available at the Melbourne Branch; many of our students are from foreign countries and interstate. Students are supervised by leaders in their field, and student committees are established to ensure balanced and focused project management throughout the project.

The Ludwig prides itself in providing the most comprehensive support for post-graduate students. This starts by matching students to supervisors to ensure a smooth partnership for the years ahead. Only the more senior staff, selected for their international training and proven track record, take on the responsibility of students. This is complemented by a highly trained staff of post-docs and research assistants with years of experience in their chosen areas. Expert technical guidance is never far away. Students gather together once a month for lunch and present informal seminars about their work.

In the laboratory, the expectation is for the students to spend their time solving biological and medical problems. As well as full provision of essential reagents and media, the Institute provides, "on site", the most advanced computer support, including online journal access, bioinfomatics, DNA and protein sequencing, oligonucleotide and peptide synthesis, biosensor facilities, bioreacter, Good Manufacturing Practice facility, confocal microscopy and a first-class animal facility (including specific-pathogen-free conditions). The Institute also recognizes the need for students to receive exposure to science overseas, and aims to provide each student with the opportunity to participate in a conference overseas towards the end of their studies. In addition, the Institute also provides a generous book allowance and reimbursement of student union fees.
