Student Research

"Good quality, motivated students are the life-blood of any research focused laboratory. They are usually given the most challenging, yet ultimately the most exciting and rewarding, projects. At LICR our commitment is to provide post-graduate students with an environment in which to excel in cancer research and make original discoveries which will improve the understanding and treatment of cancer. To this aim the Institute provides state-of-the-art facilities and world-class scientists and medical specialists to guide young researchers"

LICR Melbourne Centre for Clinical Sciences

Anna Cvrljevic

From : Melbourne Uni, Dept of Pathology/LICR/Peter Mac, BSc (Hons).

Degree : Ph.D.

Project : Intracellular Signalling by the De2-7 Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor

Goal : To determine the biological role and significance of key tyrosine residues of the de2-7 EGFR, which may help explain its function and tumourgenicity.

Memorable Moment : Too many to list

Memorable social experience regarding student life : Life at LICR (Austin campus) is never dull. Both staff and students here are friendly and supportive, with regular social events held throughout the year.

Reason for choosing Ludwig : LICR offered not only the project and resources that would enable me to complete my studies successfully in the field I was interested in, but also a supportive, friendly environment that would ensure my time here was enjoyable.

Hui Gan

From : Melbourne Uni; Melbourne

Degree : MBBS(Hons); B.Med.SC; 12 months lab experience in 1995 at LICR whilst doing my B.Med.Sc

Project : EGFR - mechanisms of resistance, effects of scheduling, combination with other cancer therapeutics using Invitro cell systems, mice xenograft models. As many cancers as I can!

Memorable Moment : It changes from week to week!

Memorable social experience regarding student life : It's all been good

Reason for choosing Ludwig : Because the people are nice and they are doing research that I have some familiarity with

Craig Gedye

From : B.Sc.(Hons) › Medicine › Physician Training › Advanced Training in Medical Oncology with Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Degree : Ph.D. (2nd Year)

Project : Tumour immunoevasion
1. Investigating whether crosspresentation of tumour-associated antigens by endothelial cells contributes to T-lymphocyte adhesion, transmigration and homing.
2. Elucidating if melanoma is a stem-cell driven malignancy, as has been demonstrated in leukaemia, breast cancer and glioblastoma and medulloblastoma.

Goal : Finish Ph.D., Run marathon, Get a job and If I do a post-doc, make sure it’s somewhere exotic, exciting, and luxurious

Memorable Moment : Actually getting something to work… (it’s OK, I’m in my 2nd year, everybody feels this way… so I’m told)

Reason for choosing Ludwig : Name another multinational, translationally diverse, well funded cancer research organisation that has branches in Melbourne, and where advances made in the lab can be taken all the way through to clinical trials.

Ken Pang

From : Melbourne Uni; Melbourne

Degree : MBBS(Hons); B.Med.SC; 12 months lab experience in 1995 at LICR whilst doing my B.Med.Sc

Project : To identify interesting noncoding RNA genes in different mouse T cell subsets, and to examine their expression patterns and possible roles in T cell function and regulation.

Memorable Moment : Spending late nights at the lab with Andy Oates and Thomas Luft back in 1995

Memorable social experience regarding student life : Doing the swim leg of a triathlon in the rather cold waters off Frankston beach

Reason for choosing Ludwig : I had a good experience last time, felt very supported by the Insttitue, and wanted to work with Weisan.
