Tony Burgess has had a long interest in the molecules that contribute to the tumourigenic
state and/or serve as potential targets for therapeutic intervention in cancers. In particular, he
and the members of his lab have an interest in growth factor and cytokine signal transduction
pathways in normal and neoplastic cells.
In particular, Tony has been studying the structure, activation and signaling from the EGF
receptor and its family in both normal and neplastic cells. The EGF receptor is a potential
target for cancer therapy: knowledge of its structure, activation mechanisms, the ramifications
of its signaling actions and the effects of antagonists and inhibitors should help to improve
cancer treatment. The laboratory has developed several cell systems to facilitate the analysis
of EGF receptor signaling, but there is a considerable focus on the biochemistry and biology of
colonic cell production, differentiation, migration, adherence, and transformation. This has led
to signaling research in the areas of apc, laminin-10, TGF-ß receptor
and the biochemistry of the ephrin/eph system.
